A geographic information system (GIS) is an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS is distinguished from other information system technology in its ability to perform common database operations and statistical analysis, as well as complex visualization and geographic analysis.  

SCAG uses GIS for a variety of purposes. Examples are listed below.
 
·         GIS is used to map projects that it plans and funds, such as transportation projects in the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) and the Federal Transportation Improvement Program (FTIP).
·         GIS is used to perform spatial and statistical analyses to support long-range plans, such as analyses to evaluate the potential effectiveness of new transportation projects.
·         GIS is used to assess the public transportation system, such as an analysis of whether low-income, minority, disabled and elderly populations are being properly served by the transportation system. SCAG has used GIS to conduct Environmental Justice analysis.
·         GIS is used to create user-friendly tools to promote the use of GIS for updating databases such as existing land use.
·         GIS is used to map the outputs of SCAG's travel demand model.
·         GIS is used for growth forecasting/modeling efforts and to perform quality control on model output.
·         GIS is used to analyze and display a wide variety of data and make it accessible and understandable to SCAG staff, elected officials, partner agencies, stakeholders and the general public.

SCAG has acquired or developed a variety of GIS data to support our GIS activities. Unless restricted by licensing or non-disclosure agreements, these data are available for distribution to others. To view the data available and/or download go to the GIS Library.

SCAG is the only agency in southern California that has developed an existing land use database covering every parcel in the region. The next version is scheduled for completion in July 2013.

SCAG utilizes Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), Zone 11N, NAD83. All units are measured in meters.

SCAG currently licenses TomTom street network. If you are a consultant working on a project for SCAG, the data is available free of charge for SCAG project work only. To access the street network contact Kimberly Clark at clark@scag.ca.gov

SCAG uses the ESRI suite of GIS software, including ARCMAP 10.1

 

For member jurisdictions, SCAG offers a free membership benefit called GIS Services Program. This program offers many benefits including but not limited to data sharing, training (Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced) data conversion (CAD to shapefile), simple application development, and a quarter newsletter.
